เป็นปลากระดูกแข็ง จัดเป็นปลาขนาดกลาง มีสันหางยาวและเห็นได้ชัดเจนที่เรียกว่า scute สามารถพบทั่วไปในเขตร้อน และเขตอบอุ่น ปลามงมักว่ายน้ำหากินใกล้ฝั่งรอบเกาะ โดยเฉพาะโดยเฉพาะตามแนวปะการัง กองหิน ออกไปจนถึงทะเลลุกประมาณ 100 เมตร

- ชอบหากินเวลาครึ้มเมฆ ครึ้มฝน
- จัดเป็นปลาขนาดกลาง ยกเว้น Giant trevally ที่สามารถมีขนาดได้ถึง 1.8เมตร

สามารถพบได้ทั้งน้ำตื้นและน้ำลึก ส่วนใหญ่อยู่เป็นฝูงมักหากินบริเวณผิวน้ำ เวลาล่าเหยื่อส่งเสียงดังเวลาฮุบเหยื่อ
