Sea Turtles are a group of marine reptiles known for being covered in shells. There are 7 species of Sea Turtles worldwide, 5 of which can be found in the Maldives: Green, Hawkbill, Olive Ridley, Loggerhead, and Leatherback. Sea Turtles are both herbivores and carnivores, with some species changing their diet as they age.

Fun Facts

  1. The temperature of the nest determines the gender of Sea Turtle’s hatchlings.
  2. All Sea Turtles but Kemp’s Ridley lay their eggs at night.
  3. Sea Turtles can not retract their head and flippers into their shells like other turtles.
  4. Sea Turtles can hold their breath for more than an hour.
  5. The primary threat to Sea Turtles at present is marine debris.

Sea Turtle spotting technique
Sea Turtles are Diurnal animals and will spend most of the daylight hours hunting for their food. So, observing their food sources is the best way to spot them. When observing Sea Turtles, you should not get too close and don’t disturb them with loud noises.
